The Franklys 2015
Single missive from international female squad brings forth a gospel news.
Neither pop softness nor riot grrrls grit truly reflect a female band’s genuine soul, but the middle position taken by this London quartet does. Still unsigned – read: hungry and angry – they lay down a twangy riff on the band’s third single to carry on the message of “Bad News” that finds Sweden’s Jen Ahlkvist unleashing her inner Strummer, while Brit bassist Zoë Biggs and American drummer Nicole Pinto go all dirty on the groove.
The singer’s compatriot Fanny Broberg stokes such a buzz with an inflammatory guitar solo which kicks agitation even higher and blows the title’s pessimism out of the water, even when the tempo slows down to a funereal crawl. After that, a rocking mayhem that sounds like an advent of a major success. The ladies got the look and the sound to walk the mile.
