BLACK SABBATH Box Up “Live Evil” For Fortieth Anniversary

As powerhouse-like as they used to be on-stage, BLACK SABBATH had never been prone to serving up in-concert improvisations to set their in-front-of-audience performances much apart from studio cuts – at least until Ronnie James Dio came onboard – which is why the ensemble’s live albums didn’t seem so important to the quartet, what with 1980’s “Live At Last” not being sanctioned by them and only the palindrome-tiled “Live Evil” from 1983 given enough thought and attention. And it’s this legendary offering that will see an anniversary reissue – a super deluxe edition – on June 2nd.

The word “legendary” is not an empty epithet in the occasion of “Live Evil”: recorded during the group’s 1982 US tour in the wake of their “Mob Rules” LP which saw the collective split between British and American musicians – Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler in the former category and Dio and Vinny Appice in the latter – it led to the line-up’s demise, as the founding members accused the singer in stealing into the studio in the nights to bring his vocals up in the mix. That, of course, wasn’t true, yet it was enough to rearrange power balance to what had been there earlier. The reissue should emphasize the real state of affairs even better, as there are a fresh remaster of the classic tapes and a fresh remix of the platter’s individual tracks, preserved for posterity over four nights: all in all, four discs – CD or vinyl – so the new edition, a first concert one in the band’s anniversary series (and a first post-Ozzy one), doesn’t have anything really new (save for the booklet, a tour book replica and a poster), although those individual tracks suggest the availability of entire live documents “Live Evil” was compiled from. These might emerge once “Mob Rules” is expanded into a box set, but, providing this classic – together with “Heaven And Hell” – were put out in non-super deluxe form in 2021 in the States and a year later in the UK, the wait for those can be quite long.
