Cult Psych Heroes PUSSY Deliver Sequel Album Five Decades After

It’s easy to giggle at the name of British band PUSSY – yet it’s equally easy to get pulled into their riveting psychedelia. The Hertfordshire quartet sounded rather cinematic and a tad heavy on their late-’60s debut which presented proto-prog to those willing to listen, and the number of the willing has been steadily growing in the last decades, especially when the LP pressings of the album started selling for hundreds of dollars and the foursome’s songs started appearing on rarities’ collections, including the “Mojo” magazine’s covermount CD. Still, the ensemble disappeared without a trace within the first year of their existence – to return now with a new platter in tow.

It will be out under the title of “Pussy Plays Again” on March 22nd bearing the cover which leaves no doubt there’s a continuation of that classic longplay, featuring, alongside the old band’s skin-hitter, three new members, and fronted by none other than Bob Sawyer, known as a guitarist in early line-ups of IRON MAIDEN, PRAYING MANTIS and WEAPON – quite a pedigree to fuel the fresh offering and the concert performances. So how did it all happen?

“The ‘Pussy Plays’ was released back in 1969 and, over the years, achieved cult status,” explains Sawyer. “I met original drummer Steve Townsend about five years ago, and we both played in house bands for various jamming venues. About two years ago, Steve was in my home studio, listening to some of my psychedelic recordings, and suggested that we make a sequel album, so we got in bassist Rick Cullen and guitarist and keyboard player Paul Jackson and, with a big dose of inspiration, wrote and recorded the ‘Pussy Plays Again’ album. Afterwards, we secured a contract with Secret Records, who are releasing said album in two month’ time.”
