THE DUKE ROBILLARD ORGAN TRIO: here’s a strange-sounding ensemble name – yet, fortunately, the music this enterprise perform isn’t strange at all. It’s as captivating as any proposition coming from Duke Robillard, the tireless guitarist whose latest platter "Six Strings Of Steel" was released only a couple of months ago and who found himself excited enough with a new recording to schedule the issue of what he titled “A Smooth One” for September.
A purely instrumental work careening more towards fusion and trad jazz than blues, its genesis lies in a record where Italian ivories driver Alberto Marsico was featured prominently enough to have captured Duke’s ear – so when Robillard heard familiar sounds from a stage in Romania, he approached the Hammond player, and the two jammed on a few tunes. The rest, as they say, is history: adding Mark Teixeira from the axeman’s band on drums, the soloists recorded this – and what a wonderful album “A Smooth One” is!
