Frank Zappa and his MOTHERS OF INVENTION weren’t regular guests on German “Beat Club” show that preserved a lot of historic moments in its Bremen studios, but when the Americans hit it on October 6th, 1968, they did a fabulous job. A pity, only 39 minutes of it, including interview with Frank, made the final cut and make the rounds now in collectors’ circles. A good news: the originally transmitted tracklist – see it below – is expanded for a DVD release with a rehearsal footage, where “A Pound For A Brown On The Bus,” “Sleeping In A Jar” and “Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Sexually Aroused Gas Mask” appear alongside the ensemble’s takes on Varese and Wagner’s classics and their own pieces.
Titled “The Lost Broadcast: The Full Performance,” it’s an engaging insight into the works of one of the most creative minds in popular music. While the actual songs breakdown remains to be seen (read the review), the original run contained the following tracks:
Improvisations
King Kong
The String Quartet
Instrumental
Uncle Meat
Lohengrin
Gas Mask
Let’s Make The Water Turn Black (instrumental)
