One of the records that define their makers, 1971’s “In Search Of Space” was HAWKWIND‘s first great, if transitional, longplay which defied its sophomore status by offering what would be known as space rock, opening floodgates for such future classics as "Warrior On The Edge Of Time" and introducing, together with a follow-up single, a couple of important figures, Robert Calvert and Lemmy, who would soon join Dave Brock and Nik Turner as creative forces. Of course, there’s arguably only one perennial on the platter, “Master Of The Universe” destined to become a concert staple for decades to come, yet the aforementioned 7-inch was “Silver Machine” – a piece fit to pierce mass consciousness. And soon the listeners will have the chance to experience the evergreen album in a different way.
Slated for release on August 30th, the fresh reissue of “In Search Of Space” transforms it into a deluxe box set containing two CDs and Blu-ray with remastered version of the original mix, new stereo mix and a 5.1 Surround Sound variant – the last two designed by Stephen W Tayler – all of these augmented with four bonus cuts: two single sides and two outtakes from the recording sessions. To give it all a context, included is a 68-page book and a reproduction of the “The Hawkwind Log” produced by Calvert and designer Barney Bubbles. A pity, there’s no more extra material, yet what there is seems essential.
