They shared the stage before, Jann Klose and Annie Haslam, but as far as studio recordings go, the singers have never joined their distinctive voices. But now, working on a follow-up to 2013’s "Mosaic" – or his 2016’s joint effort with Gary Lucas – Jann reached out to the RENAISSANCE warbler with a proposition to lay down a Peter Gabriel classic.
“Don’t Give Up” is a charity single, with proceeds benefitting Desmond Tutu’s TutuDesk Foundation, so there’s much more to the cover than meets the eye. As for the eye-candy of the artwork lettering, it’s Annie’s creation.
Klose explains:
“We had wanted to record a song together for a long time… Annie actually asked me to ‘write something like ‘Don’t Give Up’ for us’ and at some point – we were hanging out after a show we did together at the Sellersville Theater in Pennsylvania last December – I suggested, why not record the Peter Gabriel song? It’s a great song that lends itself to a duet perfectly, fits our musical styles and it has a message that speaks to the times we live in now.”
Out now on digital platforms, “Don’t Give Up” is a wonderful take on a genuine gem.
