Renowned mostly for his prominent role as an organ-grinder in FUNKADELIC/PARLIAMENT, Bernie Worrell was a prolific presence on a session scene, recording with a myriad of artists such as Jack Bruce and Stanley Clarke – the part of his life which soon will be covered in a dedicated tome, being penned by Cedric Hendrix – and elevating some of these adventures to projects the legendary ivories-driver steered to greatness himself. One of those came via guitarist John King and involved drummer extraordinaire Cindy Blackman and The Woo master.
Kicking off the endeavor back in 1994, King wanted what would eventually be titled “Spherical” to sound as mightily noisy as only an experimental mélange of funk, rock and blues can, which led him to the perfect choice of collaborators and a few high-octane recordings done in New York – and lost, seemingly for good, until John recently unearthed the results in his archive to restore and issue on October 27th. Should feel like a gem.
