A master of bluegrass-rock, John McEuen is one of a few alumni of THE NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND who are able to boast of having a proper solo career and even of winning a Grammy for playing on his school friend’s Steve Martin’s album. Much less known is the veteran’s obsession with poetry, yet it’s this aspect of the artist’s creatuve curve that lies in the heart of John’s forthcoming record – McEuen’s first since 2016’s “Roots Music Made In Brooklyn” and his most unusual one.
This platter, titled “The Newsman: A Man Of Record” and scheduled for release on March 22nd, consists of spoken-word pieces, with the singer reading verses from the 19th and 20th centuries and underscoring it by instrumental melodies in a way he did when scoring films. Not for everyone, of course, but true lovers of art may cherish the album.
