Covering other people music has been a been a notable feature of Paul Gilbert‘s solo repertoire throughout his decades-long career, his 2014 platter "Stone Pushing Uphill Man" comprising no less than eight borrowed melodies, and those more often than not were instrumental readings of familiar material. Still, the MR. BIG cofounder usually selected songs from various sources, so “The Dio Album” which he releases on April 7th, will be the veteran’s first offering dedicated to a single artist.
Of course, it’s possible to argue that the record comprises four RAINBOW, four BLACK SABBATH and four DIO classics but all of these were in major written by the great Ronnie James Dio. Whether any of the pieces has vocals attached is unknown at the moment – in Gilbert’s fashion, hardly so – yet Paul’s effort promises to be interesting in any case.
