For all the glory of Brazilian artists, collaborations between the South Americans and musicians from the Northern Hemisphere are far and few between, despite precedence set by the likes of Jon Anderson, so it’s immensely satisfying to hear about the forthcoming album by Milton Nascimento, one of the most influential singer-songwriters this side of tropicalismo, and Esperanza Spalding, one of the most interesting vocalists and bassists to have come from the States. Of course, the two have a lot of common ground in the fields of latin jazz and bossa nova, and still listen to them share the same space is a spellbinding experience.
The duo’s joint opus simply titled “Milton + Esperanza” will be released on August 9th. Comprised of sixteen cuts, including THE BEATLES’ “A Day In The Life” and “Earth Song” from Michael Jackson’s repertoire, as well as a fresh version of “Outubro” off Nascimento’s sophomore effort, “Courage” from 1969, the platter features quite a few guests, first and foremost Paul Simon – whose “Graceland” was a milestone in the world music genre, so there’s a kinship on display – and Dianne Reeves. Should be sensational – and surely sensual.
