Not that R.E.M. ever needed validation of their pop-rock credentials, and the band had their fair share of covers, yet it must be a special sign of peer respect when one’s songs are recorded by none other than the great Micky Dolenz, the last standing member of THE MONKEES – even if there are only four cuts and these will see the light of day only on vinyl and CD.
The date for the release of “Dolenz Sings R.E.M.” – produced by Christian Nesmith, the other Monkee, Michael Nesmith’s son, has been set for November 3rd. It should confirm, in Mickey’s words, that “a solid recording always begins with solid material” as it made Michael Stipe exclaim, “I have died and gone to heaven!” while Peter Buck noted that “It’s unreal to hear that voice, adding new depth to songs we’ve written ourselves, and inhabiting them so completely.” As for the songs in question, they are:
Side One:
1. Shiny Happy People
2. Radio Free Europe
Side Two:
1. Man On The Moon
2. Leaving New York
