Marshall Crenshaw Shows Top Form On Long-Overdue LP

He was very busy, album-wise, back in the ’80s, but following decades saw Marshall Crenshaw slow down and then, seemingly, stop completely, with 2009’s “Jaggedland” remaining the veteran’s last longplay for years. Crenshaw’s released quite a few EPs since then, though, which are now gathered on a single disc now, titled “From The Hellhole” and planned for release on August 29th.

All the cuts on offer are newly remixed and remastered studio recordings, hailing mostly from 2012-2014, with “Walkin’ Around” dated 1990 and a cover of Todd Rundgren’s “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” from 2020, when it appeared on the "Someone / Anyone?" tribute, and including three previously unreleased songs. Some of the other pieces are Marshall’s readings of perennials, too, so there’s a lot to enjoy.

“I have been playing in Marshall Crenshaw’s band for three years now,” enthuses guitarist Fernando Perdomo, who exclusively produced the aforementioned take on Todd classic. “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” for this record. “He is a rare artist that has never stopped being incredible in every decade of his forty-plus-years in showbiz. His current set has many highlights, but the songs that always connect with his audiences are the ones from the EPs he put out in the last twenty years. All of those great songs are now presented here!”
