In 1972 Chick Corea seemed to be flying high for that was the year when the great ivories driver issued an album titled “Return To Forever” and the ensemble of the same name emerged into existence. Before the band came to the scene, though, Corea took to the road without his crew of fellow musicians, and when he appeared in front of an audience in Sendesaal on October 29th, 1972 to entertain jazz-loving folks and tape his performance for Radio Bremen, Chick had a lot of surprises up his sleeve. A document of the outing made a great bootleg – but July 17th will finally see it restored and finally released in full.
The American master didn’t only play that evening – it was a storytelling night. More so, Corea brought alive most of his then-fresh platter and prefaced it by a blinding selection of both previously recorded pieces, from solo offerings such as “Piano Improvisations” and also a Wayne Shorter cut Chick used to whip up with Miles Davis, and those he would lay down later, like “Children’s Song No. 1” which waited for a long time to be taken to a studio. Given the keyboardist’s first official concert album didn’t hit the shelves before 1977, “Sometime Ago: Live In Germany 1972” is a unique report from the past.
