One of the most fabulous British bluesmen, Bernie Marsden doesn’t have the recognition he deserves despite all the great work he logged in for such well-known collectives as UFO, WILD TURKEY, BABE RUTH, PAICE ASHTON LORD and, most prominently, with WHITESNAKE. The guitarist had to quit the latter band in 1982 but, after a couple of records with his own ALASKA, resumed his collaboration with the SNAKE’s other six-stringer, Micky Moody, and the two kept the legacy alive even when singer David Coverdale dissolved his ensemble. At the same time Bernie led a solid solo career, and now Marsden adds another gem to it, called “Shine.”
Out on August 18th as CD and 2LP, the veteran’s new album, laid down at Abbey Road, features a stellar line-up, with Coverdale delivering a new version of “Trouble” and another DEEP PURPLE/ex-WHITESNAKE member, Ian Paice, sharing the drum duties with Jimmy Copley who plays with MANFRED MANN‘S EARTH BAND and THE BAD APPLES alongside Moody, and if that wasn’t enough for the family feel there’s also PURPLE’s Don Airey on keyboards, who also worked with the SNAKE. To add more weight to the ranks, they include Mark Feltham from NINE BELOW ZERO on harmonica and Joe Bonamassa, a guitar fan of Bernie’s who testified to this on his own album, “Driving Towards The Daylight” with a version of Marsden’s “A Place In My Heart.” So the result must be fantastic and finally bring the artist the fame he deserves.
Says Jimmy Copley: “We recorded at Abbey Road, then Bernie came to my home town of Bath to record some more. They were fun sessions! Bernie was very open and let us find our parts! A fun session all round. The results are great! So many great guests also…”
