1972 was an unusual year for Don Van Vliet and his coterie of talented freaks, as it saw them release not one but two LPs. By the time the artists’ tour reached Kansas City, which was on April 22nd, only the first of those, “Unconditionally Guaranteed,” had been released, out that same month. Yet Captain Beefheart didn’t mind that his audience couldn’t be quite familiar with fresh material and, on the night, delivered no less than four new compositions, starting the set with a slimmed-down version of epic “Mirror Man” off the album bearing the same title, while giving the folks what they wanted in the form of faves such as “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Abba Zabba.” This show, recorded for radio, saw a bootleg release previously, yet is officially released now on CD for the first time to pick up where the band’s Vancouver concert of 1973 left off.
“Live in Cowtown, Kansas City 22nd April 1974” features the following tracks:
1. Mirror Man
2. Upon the My-O-My
