When veteran musicians record their classic material anew, it often feels like a lame attempt to cover their inability to come up with fresh cuts, yet Iain Matthews has never shied away from admitting that the “Valley Hi” album he issued back in 1973 lacked the style the singer envisioned. Perhaps, the artist formerly known as Ian was taken in the wrong direction by producer Mike Nesmith or simply didn’t want to dictate his will to players, but the idea to approach the platter from a different sonic angle seemed to sit well with Matthews – and he eventually went for it.
Out in the Eastern hemisphere now and scheduled for release on August 7th in the Western one, “Return To Tupper Street: Valley Hi Reimagined” offers the same ten songs under a similar cover – delivered by the Brit with his Dutch friends from THE WILD VERBAND. It’s not supposed to replace the ’70s opus – it’s meant to enrich the listener’s experience of that gem.
