There’s no shortage of guest-strewn rock operas many of which are created via remote contributions from most of the musicians, and for this reason Alan Simon’s “Excalibur” saga has always stood apart from the rest. More so, the French composer not only brings the stellar talent into the studio with him but also take them onstage from time to time, and that was what happened on August 15th, 2019 at Motocultor Festival in Saint-Nolff, where the project’s two-decade anniversary got celebrated in style. And now a recording of the Bretagne show is available on CD.
There are tracks from different “Excalibur” chapters, and a few from other Simon’s albums, plus two unreleased pieces – delivered by such luminaries as John Helliwell, Martin Barre, Michael Sadler, Gerry Conway and Richard Palmer and backed by orchestra. A pity, it’s a limited edition.
