With all the brouhaha surrounding the forthcoming release of SPINAL TAP‘s second movie and all the reminiscences about the original film’s humour and perfect critical capture of music business’ other sides, people tend to forget one important aspect of it all: the fact that, like THE RUTLES before them, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest – universally known as Derek Smalls. David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel, proved to be not only actors but also more than competent musicians, who would record albums and tour. No need to be surprised, then, by the issue, on September 12th, of their new platter.
Titled “The End Continues” to get tied in with the movie where its songs are featured, the record is comprised of recently penned pieces alongside a few fresh takes on the band’s classics as well as, apparently a couple of covers. These classics warrant a special attention, though, as there are special guests to add a different flavor to them: Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood and two knights, Elton John and Paul McCartney, the latter two upping the nobility level of it all, given Guest is a baron. With the album’s cover mimicking that of CROSBY, STILLS & NASH’s debut (it was Henry Diltz behind the camera), the results are impressive.
