There were at least three Kings of blues whose regal status was stressed by their last name: Albert, B. B. and Freddie. Each of the three was magnificent, yet only one earned the title of Texas Cannonball, because Freddie’s delivery and songwriting combined muscular punch with almost intimate delicacy, and no wonder that, to belatedly celebrate his hero’s 90th birthday, Popa Chubby decided to record quite a few of the late legend’s classics. More so, the New Yorker called his friends to join in the tribute fun, the results of it all being the “I Love Freddie King” album that will see the light of day on March 28th.
Among those who lent their licks to the homage that includes such perennials as “Hideaway” and “I’m Going Down” are luminaries like Joe Bonamassa, Eric Gales and Mike Zito, and what they did promises to become a strong contender for the “Album of the Year” accolade.
