Roedelius Celebrates His 90th Birthday With A Box Of Experiments

Even though Krautrock is often seen as something secondary to prog, the German genre started somewhat earlier than that, continental experimentation with sound preceding the fleshing out of British psychedelia, which why the fact of Hans-Joachim Roedelius, one of kosmische musik’s prime movers, turning 90 years of age on October 26th shouldn’t come as a surprise. Only it does, and the man behind such classics as CLUSTER’s second album HARMONIA’s “Deluxe” celebrates his anniversary in style – with a series of concerts and a four-LP box set.

The collection titled simply “90” which will be out on October 25th is comprised of previously unreleased material preserved on 2-track Revox tapes between 1968 and 1980, so it’s not a retrospective per se – especially given Achim’s very vague memories of when a particular piece got recorded and with whom. Still, such an approach – and the numeric marking of the tracks – works wonders for blending the result into a mind-trip the veteran’s a master of.
