One of the greatest New Zealand exports, SPLIT ENZ may have stopped recording more than forty years ago, but they’re still loved enough to stage a reunion once in a while, and the Finn brothers are still riding high. No wonder, then, that the veterans decided to mark the 50th anniversary of the band’s debut album by starting reissue programme. Bearing the title of “ENZyclopedia” and getting underway with the “Volumes One & Two” box set on November 14th, it’s supposed to shine a fresh light on the collective’s legacy.
There are five CDs inside, two of these housing the recent remasters of 1975’s “Mental Notes” and “Second Thoughts” from 1976, with the latter reprised on a separate disc in remixed form – the effort undertaken by the group’s original keyboard player Eddie Rayner – while the rest of space is given to the ensemble’s early singles and rarities. A vinyl version will also be made available, with the first platter’s remaster, the second one’s remix and a collection of ’45’s presented on three LPs. A valiant beginning.
