While all the supergroups are inherently apt to implode, THE POWER STATION seemed poised to do so from the start, as singer Robert Palmer – who formed this collective with two of DURAN DURAN’s Taylors, John and Andy, and CHIC’s Tony Thompson – hadn’t been much of a team player since his VINEGAR JOE days, and still the British-American quartet managed to issue and album which is considered a classic now. Out in 1985, their self-titled platter reached No. 6 in “Billboard” charts and its three singles, including a cover of “Get It On (Bang A Gong)” by T. REX, found global success too, securing the foursome, already with Michael Des Barres at the fore, a spot at Live Aid. It’s only logical, then, that the record will be re-released four decades later as a box set.
Scheduled for January 23rd, 2026, the “DLX” edition of “The Power Station” will be comprised of four CDs, one dedicated to the original album’s fresh remaster, two to a concert with Des Barres at the mic, and one to various bits and pieces, such as instrumental takes, but surprisingly, a few cuts which landed on the longplay’s 2005 reissue won’t appear here, and neither will a DVD that accompanied the previous reissue. Otherwise, a good package.
