Anthony Phillips Returns To Piano On New Record

Forty-five years have passed since “1984” shifted many a follower’s perspective of Anthony Phillips as performer, if not composer, as the artist primarily seen as a guitar player issued a keyboard-based album. And even though it wouldn’t be his last record of such a shape, with “Ivory Moon” and "SoirĂ©e" – two volumes of Ant’s “Private Parts & Pieces” series – found Phillips move to an acoustic instrument, any new platter of this sort still surprises his listeners. No doubt the same emotions will be reserved for the veteran’s forthcoming opus, titled “Gemini – Pieces For Piano” and scheduled for release on April 10th.

Comprised of tracks preserved for posterity between October 2022 and October 2025, the two-CD recital whose title refers to a tune Anthony came up with for the pianist Martha Argerich, and developed into a duet with Gabriele Baldocci, which premiered in 2018 and was brought to the public a few times since then. It’s the first time, however, that aficionados will get to hear this music in the writer’s version.
