When Shane MacGowan passed away in November 2023, this world became significantly duller, for not a lot of performers could be as funny and poetic at the same time as this Irish artists was. Thankfully, the legacy he left behind is rich enough to keep on giving – both pleasure and inspiration, and the musicians Shane inspired are many, and their number includes not only those who came after MacGowan but also those who preceded him. And three dozens of his followers decided to cover the great late singer’s cuts and join forces for a tribute album.

Titled “20th Century Paddy: The Songs Of Shane MacGowan” and penciled in for release on November 13th as two-CD or three-LP packages, this collection includes pieces from various eras of Shane’s career, from MacGowan’s work with both THE POGUES and THE POPES, delivered by such prominent figures as Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen and U2, and if some may find the presence of Johnny Depp’s a bit grating, the appearances of Steve Earle and, especially, Moya Brennan, who died only three months ago, feel poignant. Add the likes of DROPKICK MURPHYS and THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, and the allure of this project will be impossible to resist.
