There’s been a few tomes about Rory Gallagher over the years, yet all of those told the great late artist’s story from the outside, with a rare insight providing a glimpse of who he really was. That’s why a book written by the musician’s brother Dónal – and co-penned by Jamie Dickson, the editor-in-chief of “Guitarist” magazine – promised to be so special. Not only because the surviving Gallagher brother not only grew up with the flamboyant-in-concert, if shy-off-stage, future performer but stayed with Rory all his life, as a manager.
Edged In Blue
Rory didn’t have a family of his own, so having Dónal at his side was all the more important and, perhaps, emotionally stabilizing for him. Later, after Gallagher the player passed away, Dónal assumed the mantle of the keeper of his sibling’s legacy, overseeing various reissues and, rather recently, making his famous Stratocaster a talked-about asset. So “Edged In Blue: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Odyssey with Rory Gallagher” – titled after a track off the “Calling Card” album – which will be out on September 25th promises to deliver a lot of revelations without needless sensationalism.
With a foreword provided by an über-fan Joe Bonamassa – who only this year released a live tribute to Gallagher, “The Spirit Of Rory” – it’s bound to become a riveting reading.
