Seems like it took the passing of first Tim Bogert in 2021 and then Jeff Beck in 2023 and Carmine Appice remaining the last man standing for a respected record label to finally take some action and prepare a box set – to be made available on September 15th on four CDs or eight LPs – of their legendary trio. Although there’s nothing on BECK BOGERT & APPICE‘s “Live 1973 & 1974” that connoisseurs haven’t already heard – after all, the band’s concert at Osaka’s “Koseinenkin Hall” originally saw the light of day, in Japan only, back in 1973, and their performance at London’s “Rainbow” theater was out on bootlegs – but to listen to it all in proper quality should feel like a real treat.
It’s crisp now that Jeff, shortly before his death, and Carmine mixed everything from the original multitrack tapes which had been in Beck’s archives. Except for a cleaned-up sound, the pieces on display are remarkable for presenting not only the material from the little band’s sole studio album which had been released to become a classic yet also the cuts – such as “(Get Ready) Your Lovemaker’s Coming Home” and “Jizz Whizz” from its officially unissued sequel. And, of course, the live takes on “Superstition” are impossible to underestimate. A no-brainer offering.
