Bugra Sisman 2015
Progressive in perpetual motion: Istanbul guitarist explores existential realms on debut EP.
Challenging art-rock’s tendency for a long-form realization is a refreshing endeavor; more so, there’s irony in the beginning of this four-track mini-album, as “Zero” reveals Bugra Sisman’s true self, once an Eastern pattern has ripped the bluesy solemnity of it all. That’s a rumination on life – past, present and future – but while “The Comprehension” comes dipped in prog tradition, riffs driving kaleidoscopic time signatures home, the composer’s manner is deeply rooted in the rich stratum of Turkish rock and sprinkled with fusion. There’s a low twang to give “The Existence” a subliminal quality, yet it’s undercut with hazy shards of funk and piano dewdrops, so it requires a few spins to fully feel the finely-textured scope of “Until Now”: the spirituality of the journey is rewarding.
