At first glance, there were several jazz-rock ensembles like NUCLEUS in England back in the ’70s; but then, there weren’t, and NUCLEUS, led by trumpeter Ian Carr, seemed to be one of the most intrepid fusion collectives ever. And if there’s a single point to see this, it would be the band’s concert album from 1976 – first released three decades down the line from the time the group’s performance had been preserved for posterity, and now ready to appear reissued in a newly remastered form.
Live At Loughborough University 1976
Out on October 30th, “Live At Loughborough University 1976” presents the combo undauntedly playing all five pieces from their then-latest platter “Alleycat” and three numbers off the two previous studio offerings, “Snakehips Etcetera” and “Under The Sun” – not that the ensemble had any hits, but their confidence in relying on recent material spoke volumes of his character and art. Approved by the Ian Carr Trust, it’s a perfect companion to the "Torrid Zone" box set.
