Danny Peyronel Dares Not Look Away On Second Solo Album

Best remembered for his contributions to the first two platters by HEAVY METAL KIDS – the band he would be fronting on 2003’s "Hit The Right Button" – and, even more so, to "No Heavy Petting" by UFO, vocalist and ivories master Danny Peyronel has done much, much more over his career than simply play. For the last-mentioned record, he penned “Highway Lady” and co-wrote “Can You Roll Her” with Phil Mogg and Andy Parker; for “Profiles” by Nick Mason and Rick Fenn, he composed, with the two main men, “Israel” that he voiced and “Lie For A Lie” that David Gilmour and Maggie Reilly sang; he created the title track for “Midnight At The Lost And Found” by Meat Loaf. Those are but a few of the veteran’s achievements that, surprisingly, include only one solo album, "Make The Monkey Dance" from 2004, and it took him two decades to deliver a follow-up.

Now, Danny’s sophomore effort under his own name – and under the title of “It Happens When You Look The Other Way” – is ready to be out, with its lead-in single, the platter’s titular track, scheduled to hit streaming platforms on September 30th, and the second, “Heaven’s In A Chevy Tonight” – based on a phrase given to Peyronel by Loaf and paying homage to the latter – penciled in for October.

“Our plan is to release three, maybe even four singles first, and build up the record to the point where a physical release is the next step, be it on CD or vinyl, or both,” says Danny, who sings all the songs, a theme from a Bond film with updated lyrics (watch the video below) among them, and plays all the keyboards on it. “This album was the product of my moving to wonderful Barcelona and meeting David Pereira-Oleart. He is an excellent guitarist, with a highly musical approach and we hit it off instantly, since he related to my songs on a totally intuitive level. From then on, he ended up producing the record. We recruited my old pal David Biosca, a terrific drummer with whom I played in the Eighties in the legendary Spanish band BANZAI. David played on half of the tracks, and Jordi Vila on the rest. We didn’t really go out looking for big name old buddies, since this is a very song-orientated work, and those who guested did so on a very spontaneous and organic way, such as my old pal Tibu, the bass player from BANZAI, and the dazzling young 22-year-old guitar prodigy Martin Buszano, who will likely join us in the stage band. On bass we have a very special player in Lakis Economou; he lives in London and we met when he was playing in Malcolm Bruce’s band. I figured, if he’s good enough for Jack’s son, he’s good enough for us! (Laughs.) But seriously, apart from being a lovely guy, he is a poet of a bass player and even played double bass on a very New Orleans bluesy-shuffle – recorded live in a dive! – called ‘When The Devil’s In’.”

Judging by what this scribe has heard, the record promises to be rather arresting.
