1993 wasn’t an easy year for DIO as the band’s then-latest album, “Strange Highways,” showed a continuing shift towards heavier kind of metal; in places that record sounded gloomier than 1992’s “Dehumanizer” that saw Ronnie James Dio back in the BLACK SABBATH fold. Yet he loved it, and about the half of the album was taken to the stage where guitarist Tracy G, bassist Jeff Pilson, keyboardist Scott Warren and the faithful Vinny Appice on drums helped the singer create less theatrical but still mesmerizing show. And it’s of those performances that will be out on May 12th, shortly before the fourth anniversary of Ronnie’s untimely passing, on 2CD, DVD and Blu-Ray.
Titled “Live In London: Hammersmith Apollo 1993,” it surprisingly features only one RAINBOW track alongside a few of the SABBATH classics and best samples of DIO’s back catalogue. With no previous concert releases from that era, it’s not an item to miss out on.
