HOME COOKIN’ BAND –
Working For A Good Tip

Baking life into their art, freshly formed Chicagoan ensemble serve up debut single.

When it comes to bringing something to a club customers, musicians and waitresses play a similar role – the former delivering intangible goodies and the latter palpable meals, and singer Anastasiya Protasevych knows the two aspects all too well, firsthand, to be inspired and put these experiences into a song. Co-penned with guitarist Michael Costelloe, “Working For A Good Tip” had the punters going nuts for some time, before venues were forced to close due to Covid-19 pandemic, but such a turn of events allowed the band, rounded off by an experienced rhythm section, to take their local hit into еоу studio and preserve the piece for posterity.

It’s an unhurried number that banishes the blues in favor of infectious riff and juicy vocals which, over the toe-tapping groove and organ purr, tells the harmonies-washed story of a cantina encounter. With an increasingly prominent ivories, there’s a lot to savor here, between overall sway and piano ripples, before a sweet six-string solo is inserted into the jive. Had the cut been given more character, its punch could be mightier; as it is, “Working For A Good Tip” is as appetite-whetting as a promising debut gets. And while it’s hot, the quartet had better cook up a full-length album.
