A proud member of the clan that gave the world THE NEVILLE BROTHERS, Ivan Neville has cut a nice career for himself as multi-instrumentalist who doesn’t have to draw on such familial associations. The 63-year-old’s résumé includes concert stints with the greatest artists – like Bernard Purdie and Keith Richards – and studio work with a lot of famous collectives, THE ROLLING STONES among them, plus the membership in SPIN DOCTORS and the leadership in DUMPSTAPHUNK. All these leave not a lot of time for Ivan’s endeavors under his own name, yet April 21st is the day when Neville’s first solo album in almost two decades is out.
There’s no doubt that the man behind “Not Just Another Girl” which rose to Number 26 in Billboard charts back in 1988 can concoct a sweet and infectious tune, yet songs on “Touch My Soul” – this is the new platter’s title – run much deeper, what with the composer’s experience of the last 35 years and his desire to make the record a paean to New Orleans, where Neville was born. Here’s why it bears a tangible Louisiana sound – augmented by the presence of Ivan’s father Aaron and uncle Cyril, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Trombone Shorty and Doyle Bramhall II – and here’s why it’s worth the wait.
