Drummer Don Heffington was a musician’s musician, never commanding attention to his talents yet laying down sympathetic grooves that, from the ’70s and almost to his passing in 2021 at the age of 70, propelled performances by Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan and other American luminaries. He also was one of the founding members of LONE JUSTICE whose third, and first in 36 years, album "Viva" will be out on October 25th, with Don driving the rhythms but not present in this world to see the platter’s release. However, before that, on October 18th, a record dedicated to Heffington himself is to be issued.
The album titled “Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’: A Tribute To Don Heffington” features songs – including pieces off his solo albums, 2014’s “Gloryland” and “Contemporary Abstractions In Folk Song And Dance” from 2016 – delivered by artists Don worked with, such as Jackson Browne, his band members such as Marvin Etzioni, and projects he was involved with, such as WATKINS FAMILY HOUR, as well as Heffington’s followers like Fiona Apple and Inara George, the daughter of Lowell. More so, there’s a couple of cuts with the late artist’s on – previously unheard and now finally finding their place. A well-deserved and rightly done homage.
