John McLaughlin Delivers Another Report From Montreux

Even though sometimes there are decade-long gaps in his discography, John McLaughlin always keeps his listeners on their toes, because each new entry in the long list of the British legend’s records shines a new light on the art of fusion. His last studio album being 2021’s “Liberation Time” which captured the essence of the pandemic, and a concert one “Live in San Francisco” from three years prior to that, it’s about time Mahavishnu John delivered something new – and on August 8th, McLaughlin will.

Of course, as its very title suggests, “Live At Montreux Jazz Festival 2022” – not his first recording done at the annual get-together in Switzerland – is not exactly fresh, yet the material comprising this two-CD / Blu-ray set comes for the most part from the platters the guitarist released relatively recently. There’s half of 2015’s “Black Light” played on-stage, and one cut from the aforementioned Covid-tinged offering, with “Mr. D.C.” from 1997 and “Hijacked” from 1994 the earliest numbers on display. Given that the master’s previous concert video was 2018’s “Live @ Belgrade” and that it was his first outing captured on camera in its entirety, the forthcoming collection looks like a must-have thing.
