When writing about the great Jon Camp‘s untimely passing two and a half months, this scribe erroneously assumed that the former RENAISSANCE bass player didn’t succeed in coming up with a solo album, simply because he had no time – yet, as it became clear almost immediately, he did. And though most of the material the veteran recorded might be lost to us, five pieces that form the 20-minute-plus EP titled “Interlude” must be made available around March 1st.
There should have been five more compositions which Jon was working on when he died, yet when, about a week before that, he sent Chris Gill from BAND OF RAIN – with whom Camp had collaborated for a few years – a folder with the remaining cuts he wanted to be finished, in addition to those mixed and shipped much earlier to Micha Steinbacher for mastering, the link led to a single file. Jon’s family couldn’t locate the rest of the numbers, but his daughter was happy for Camp’s colleague to publish what they received, and while he offered up the wordless songs for the next ensemble album, they decided not to do that and follow his original ideas instead, as he was very specific about titles and other details. In particular, Jon wanted to play everything on the instrumentals – electric and acoustic guitars, fretted and fretless basses, keyboards and hand percussion – he wrote or, in the case of the almost-orchestral “Jupiter” which is based on Gustav Holst’s classic, arranged.
To appear soon on the band’s website and Bandcamp, “Interlude” is a little masterpiece, a fitting testament to Jon Camp’s immense talent.
