Never one to blow my own trumpet, I still feel a tad stoke by the news that four of the songs I co-penned, as a lyricist, with Alex Gitlin, the leader of MAD PAINTER, who preserved them from posterity, will be issued on a vinyl platter the Boston ensemble share with Melbourne’s psych royalty, KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD. Titled “•••• — •-• ••• • -•– / — — •-• ••• • -•–“ – a weird phrase in Morse code – and prepared for release by Barrel And Squidger Records, it’s a limited edition longplay housed in a striking sleeve by British abstract artist Louise Ellerington.
If the Australians’ pieces are lifted off their “Polygondwanaland” from 2017, the Americans’ tracks come partly from 2023’s "Splashed" and partly from “Island Poetry” that’s going to be out on October 9th. The record – all 257 copies copies of it, half of them to be offered for purchase at MAD PAINTER’s gigs and their webstore – is presented in a variety of colors. What’s not to like if you like such things?
