They may have released only two studio longplay and often unfairly remembered only thanks to being founded by former DEEP PURPLE bassist Nick Simper and the presence in their ranks of Ashley Holy, the future singer with Rick Wakeman‘s ensemble, but WARHORSE were a rather impressive collective whose sort of heavy prog dated yet didn’t become boring. This band existed between 1970 and 1974 and gathered again twice, in 1985 and 2005… or so the group’s official history used to state.
In reality, the quintet seemed to have reconvened in 2001 as well, and that’s the meetup the recently issued concert recording, the veterans’ sole performance tapes in its entirety, came from. Titled “Live At Woods” and preserved by BBC producer Tony Wood when the players graced the stage of Borehamwood’s “Woods” club, the new album comprises, among the combo’s classics and rock ‘n’ roll staples, a few unfamiliar pieces, so hearing them all – on streaming platforms, as there’s no physical release – should feel like a treat.
