When followers pay homage to one of their artists that influenced them, the artists rarely contribute to such projects. Still, Richard Sinclair couldn’t remain indifferent when an idea arose of various musicians recreating “The Rotters’ Club”: HATFIELD AND THE NORTH‘s second album, releases in 1975 and revered by many since then. A jazzier offering than platters from fellow CARAVAN, this platter proved to have left a lasting impression and even inspired Jonathan Coe’s 2001 novel of the same title, so unsurprisingly there were those who longed to record the classic tunes – and did record, more than once, all the seven pieces from the original LP.
Most of the names on the tribute simply titled “The Rotters’ Club: 50th Anniversary” and credited to SINCLAIR AND THE SOUTH aren’t quite familiar to an average listener, apart from THE TANGENT – but then this ensemble’s rendition of “Chaos At The Greasy Spoon” first appeared on their “The Music That Died Alone” back in 2003. It’s unfamiliarity, though, that makes it all interesting, though, with an inclusion of “Underdub” from Phil Miller Memorial Concert adding poignancy to the proceedings. Sinclair planned to issue the comp around March 7th, the old album’s actual release date, yet he had to defer the launch until recently, with the results finally available on Richard’s Bandcamp.
