SLADE Drummer Don Powell Covers Cozy Powell’s Classic

They may not have been members of one family, but it would seem right to call Don Powell and Cozy Powell brothers in arms – or, rather, brothers in drums – yet it’s still surprising to see the former cover a tune recorded five decades ago by the late great latter. On the other hand, though, there’s certain logic in the ex-SLADE skin-hitter taking a shine to a piece the ex-BEDLAM thunder-master cut in 1974 for his single on Mickie Most’s RAK label that’s quite often associated with glam-rock.

DON POWELL BAND –
Na Na Na!

The number in question is “Na Na Na!” which emerged the A-side – backed with “Mistral” – of Cozy’s ’45 was written by British hit-maker John Cameron and laid down by Powell’s HAMMER, with Frank Aiello on vocals, Bernie Marsden on guitar, Don Airey on keyboards and Clive Chaman on bass as an infectious foot-stomper that didn’t show a lot of heaviness but riding a memorable riff and titular refrain – something Don P’s erstwhile ensemble could relate to. So no, it’s no wonder he wanted to try this with his new collective and succeeded in nailing the essence of the classic, releasing it on CD and as a digital download in radio and extended, given even more drums, mixes.

Out now, it’s deserved to be heard.
