Almost a legendary figure, Blind Willie Johnson died 70 years ago, but his songs have since become part of American cultural consciousness and have been interpreted by many famous musicians including Eric Clapton and LED ZEPPELIN. Still, there was no tribute album to the original man so, on February 26th, this is to be rectified with “God Don’t Never Change: The Songs Of Blind Willie Johnson”: the record will feature a host of notable blues, country and folk performers, including Tom Waits whose gravelly voice resembles Johnson’s vocals, pay homage to Blind Willie. A much deserved, if quite belated move, and an interesting collection of freshly cut covers.
