THE FUZZTONES Mark Their Anniversary By Releasing Rarities

It was back in 1982 that Rudi Protrudi founded THE FUZZTONES which makes 2022 the American band’s 40th anniversary – quite an excuse for issuing a bunch of previously unreleased numbers. Out on April 22nd, the collection of rarities is titled “Encore” and features one original track, “Barking Up The Wrong Tree” by Protrudi, and a smattering of covers, thus following in the wake of "NYC" from 2020 – only this time the garage-rock revivalists go beyond the obvious and draw on obscure gems to add to their catalogue, with a help of a couple of prominent guests.

Those guests are Wally Waller, playing bass on a new version of “Alexander” which he co-wrote for THE PRETTY THINGS, and Steve Mackay, the late saxophonist with THE STOOGES, wailing away on “Land Of Nod” from the RARE EARTH repertoire. Alongside these cuts and pieces by THE WILDWOOD, MARBLE HALL and THE BEVIS FROND, there are also two bonus songs on the album’s CD variant: one by THE GRASS ROOT where the guys themselves take part, and one by THE SONICS. Looks quite footstompin’. (Read the review.)
