Lesser mortals would find it hard to come up with a successor to such a brilliant album as “No Heavy Petting” that UFO issued in 1976, yet this quartet didn’t seem to have any qualms about trying to do so. Cue “Lights Out” which arrived the following year decked out in another memorable Hipgnosis cover – and featuring a cover of LOVE’s immortal “Alone Again Or” alongside seven originals, including the future concert staples “Too Hot To Handle” and the platter’s titular track. All of those are to demonstrate their timelessness on February 2nd, 2024, when the newly remastered record will see an expanded, deluxe edition.
To be made available as a 2CD or 3LP set, the classic is not to present a lot of previously unheard material, with bonus cuts limited to two single versions and a run through the aforementioned borrowed tune, but if the album’s 2008 restoration was augmented with four numbers from the “Lights Out” tour’s opening night – at London’s “Roundhouse” on April 2nd, 1977 – this edition comprises the entire document from that night, widely bootlegged and now finally properly remixed for fans’ pleasure. Sadly, there’s no more studio pieces on display to edge it all to a genuinely deluxe thing – yet it’s a nice pit stop before Phil Mogg‘s solo offering hits the shelves.
