Great as they seem to be, Vincent Crane and his ATOMIC ROOSTER remain underestimated – even after a box set of the band’s classic years saw the light of day and two former members, Steve Bolton and Peter French, rather recently resurrected the collective. Still, the ensemble’s fans are plenty, among them Mark Murdock, mostly known for being the drummer with Peter Banks’ EMPIRE, who decided to pay tribute to the veterans – but not the usual way, by choosing their tracks to cover; his homage features all original pieces done in the style of Crane and released under the name of NUCLEAR BIRD. The initial idea was to invite every musician that ever served in the band to take part in the projects – including the two aforementioned gentlemen – only some of those were unavailable and others declines, so the sole player to make it on the record is another drummer, Ric Parnell.
Titled “Tyrannical Megalomaniac” and comprised of songs voiced by Tim Pepper, with all cuts penned by Murdock except for two – “The Harvester Of Organs” and “Locked In A Graveyard” the lyrics for which got written by yours truly, the album is available on Bandcamp. So please listen to it and buy it to facilitate some other great things that are in the pipeline for Mark and myself. As a side remark, the last track is based on a true story involving the great late Dick Heckstall-Smith and moi.
