“Forever Young” by ALPHAVILLE may be the most-covered song to emerge from a German pop band – its versions have been delivered by such different artists as Laura Branigan and Kim Wilde, GREGORIAN and TANGERINE DREAM as well as Axel Rudi Pell, to name but a handful and place the piece into a rock context – yet not a lot of people give these representatives of synth-pop and new wave credit for experimentation, especially for the pair of their ’90s albums that see the group disintegrate and deserve to be reassessed November 17th, when the deluxe versions of “Prostitute” and “Salvation” are scheduled to hit the shelves.
To be exact, “experimental” is the word to describe 1994’s “Prostitute” that presented a darkly abstract amalgam of jazz and electronica which failed to connect with the collective’s fanbase who’d been waiting for a follow-up to “The Breathtaking Blue” for five long years; hence, the return to the band’s old values on 1997’s “Salvation” that failed to produce hits either but was met with warm acceptance. Now, just like their predecessors, these two little classics have been remastered to be out as a small box sets of, respectively, two and three CDs containing a lot of bonus material, mostly various mixes. Not for everyone yet connoisseurs should embrace it all.
