Art Garfunkel And Son Cover Cat Stevens On First Joint Effort

For all his talent, Art Garfunkel has always been an interpreter of other people’s material, first and foremost Paul Simon’s but also Jimmy Webb’s, and 2002’s “Everything Waits To Be Noticed” seems to be the American singer’s only offering to credit him as a co-writer on quite a few pieces. No wonder, then, that the veteran’s new album will be another covers affair – only “Father And Son” which will see the light of day on November 8th, isn’t a solo project of his. As the platter’s title – derived from its finale, a Cat Stevens perennial – suggests, there’s one of Art’s scions involved, the 34-year-old James, known professionally as Art Garfunkel Jr.

Having issued two sets of SIMON & GARFUNKEL classics in German, Junior isn’t famous at all, yet avoiding spotlight should hardly be an option after his joint effort with the senior Art, whose last recorded outing was “Some Enchanted Evening” in 2007, as their voices blend beautifully on such evergreens as Don McLean’s “Vincent” and THE EVERLY BROTHERS’ “Let It Be Me” – let alone “Nature Boy” from Nat King Cole’s repertoire. Predictable but good – or predictably good, if you like.
