With age, some artists lose the ability to surprise their listener, while others don’t, and Bruce Cockburn belongs to the latter category. While his 2023 album “O Sun O Moon” marked the veteran’s return to proper songwriting, after 2019’s "Crowing Ignites" signaled his interest in pure music, unburdened by lyrics, the Canadian’s forthcoming endeavor should find him in the covers territory.
Not that Bruce never recorded borrowed pieces before, but his forays into the repertoires of Blind Willie Johnson and the like have been few and far between, “The Blood Of Others” that’s scheduled for release on October 16th contains not a single Cockburn original. This time he goes for the evergreens – pieces he’s known and loved for decades, including “God Bless The Child” and “As Time Goes By”: given the gravitas only an octogenarian can provide, it promises to be a riveting set.
