As far as rockabilly goes, there’s hardly been a pairing of rumbling guitar and booming voice rival to one Link Wray and Robert Gordon created back in 1977 when the two issued a self-titled album and followed it with “Fresh Fish Special” a year later before going their separate ways – but not before touring together. Sadly, the legends’ joint concerts didn’t get to be recorded and didn’t get released beyond the bootleg circuit; however, one of those performances, given on June 8th, 1978 in Germany, got televised by the “Rockpalast” program only to languish in archive since the show was aired. Yet September 6th will see the historic document finally hit the shelves in glorious audio and quality video.
“Live At Rockpalast 1978” is a CD and DVD set that contains the unedited version of the recording and footage, with rehearsals and alternate versions, while the main portion of it features not only material from Gordon and Wray platters but also rock ‘n’ roll classics and, of course, Link’s evergreens and “Wild Wild Women” by Robert’s future music partner Chris Spedding. Factor in the friends accompanists THE WILDCATS – bassist Rob Stoner and drummer Anton Fig – and the package looks to come out cool.
