Dolly, Willie And Other Stars Sing Tom Petty’s Perennials

It’s been more than six years since Tom Petty left this world to embrace eternity, but he had embraced timelessness way earlier, leaving an influential legacy of songs that other artists covered without doing genuine justice to – perhaps, because those other artists were too in awe of the lead Heartbreaker. Which is why the “Petty Country” album which will be issued on June 21st should become special – and why not, if among the musicians who recorded Tom’s classics for the forthcoming tribute comp are people who he himself was influenced by?

While it must be great to listen to LADY A handle “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and to “I Won’t Back Down” done by BROTHERS OSBORNE, the thrill of hearing Steve Earle appropriate “Yer So Bad” and Willie Nelson own “Angel Dream No. 2” to share it with his son Lukas – let alone savoring Dolly Parton’s take on “Southern Accents” – is much greater. And with prominent youngsters joining the line-up here, this one’s bound to come up trumps.
