The torture of Frank Zappa‘s reissue programme never stops! Yes, the torture – because what’s been getting released lately, if we’re talking about expanded variants of his studio albums rather than concert recordings, seems irresistible to an aficionado. It was like that with “Hot Rats” and “Funky Nothingness” – and it’s going to be like that with “Over-Nite Sensation” which will see the 50th anniversary expansion on November 3rd.
One of the most accessible and brilliantly melodic Frank’s records is to be out in three versions: as a double LP that should be played at 45 rpm, as a triple LP that adds a 33 1/3 rpm platter with bonus material, and a 4CD/Blu-ray Super Deluxe set whence this material comes. Of course, it’s the last variant that’s so alluring as among the collection’s 88 tracks, of which 57 haven’t been previously made available to the public, are not only the 2012 remaster of the album – originally credited to THE MOTHERS – but a lot of outtakes and alternative cuts as well as two concert recordings. Truly irresistible! Given there’s nothing on there from Zappa’s “Apostrophe (‘)” from the same timespan, there’s going to be even more soon.
